Kanda Nissho Memorial Museum of Art

The artist who captured farm life in Shikaoi

Kanda Nissho (1937–1970) was a farmer and self-taught oil painter who grew up in Shikaoi. Although he was active for only 13 years before passing away at age 32, he is one of Hokkaido’s most famous painters. Much of his work depicts daily farm life from unconventional perspectives, painted on readily available materials like plywood. Around 140 of Kanda's paintings and sketches are housed at the Kanda Nissho Memorial Museum of Art in Shikaoi. Among them is Horse (last work, unfinished), left incomplete due to his death in 1970, a vivid reminder of the artist's interrupted life.

Fukuhara Memorial Museum

Exploring Japanese art

The Fukuhara Memorial Museum exhibits art from the collection of local businessman Fukuhara Jihei (1918–2013). The pieces range from Edo-period (1603–1867) scrolls and ceramics to sculptures and paintings from the twenty-first century. The collection comprises mostly pieces by Japanese artists, many from the Tokachi region. Fukuhara himself is portrayed in a few of the works in the museum, including a bronze statue at the entrance.
